CHURCHVILLE — The 10th season of CSI Miami will air on CBS this fall. The first season of CSI Churchville began on Monday.

As the project for her Girl Scout Gold Award, the organization’s highest honor, Christa Lawniczak of Chili designed and is the instructor for the Crime Investigation Day Camp.

The camp runs through Friday at Chestnut Ridge Elementary School and is a part of the Churchville-Chili Continuing Education program. Participating students are in fifth through eighth grades.

“I just think forensic science is an awesome field and a dream job,” said Lawniczak, a 16-year-old junior-to-be at Churchville-Chili High School.

This is not a new pursuit for her, either.

“She has always enjoyed all the TV shows like CSI and Bones,” her mother Cheryl Lawniczak said. “Even the Scooby Doo mysteries when she was little; anything with mystery-solving and crime-solving.”

The students will use the morning session to learn specific forensic skills, such as deciphering fingerprints and examining dirt composition. The afternoon is then spent analyzing a crime scene, interviewing suspects and determining the offender.

The crimes aren’t real, but the brainpower is.

“It gives the kids some enrichment and gets them out of the house,” said Wendy Reese, director of continuing education for the school district. “I think it’s a great idea for a camp. It gives kids an opportunity to learn some new skills.”

The students were anxious to solve the crimes, too.

Monday’s investigation dealt with the break-in at a real estate agency. The students examined the scene, took photographs, collected and tagged evidence, then analyzed items for fingerprints and other clues.

Vanessa Fulmore, 11 and going into sixth grade, went so far as to sniff the odor from a dish towel. “Every little clue counts,” she said.

“I love mysteries and it’s really interesting to figure out who did it,” said Emily Brockman, 10, who will be in fifth grade.

Hanna Sheehan was quite sure that whoever committed the crime was left-handed, based on the positioning of a pen on the notepad. She said that since she’s right-handed, she lays the pen in a certain direction when she’s done writing. The pen was in the opposite position in the real estate office.

“I like sneaking around and learning stuff,” said Hanna, 11, who’s going into sixth grade.

Which is the point of the class, too: To challenge minds.

Troop 578 enjoying their time at Sprucelands

It’s a two way street at Sprucelands.

This a horse in love.

Thunder was so in her glory this weekend. I saw her shine with this group of girl scouts. She was about smiling with all the attention. Wouldn’t you agree?

Watching what horses do for kids and what kids do for horses is fascinating. It is definitely a process with give-and-take. The horses benefit as much as the riders. I can honestly say it is a two way street. Everyone wins. Close friends are made. I love it.

Coming off their annual vetting on Friday, some of our herd was a bit overwhelmed with the effects of their shots. They needed tender loving care and patience. Besides, they were ready to have a confidence booster before camp begins and this weekend’s clinic was just that. The girls and adults in the clinic were wonderfully thoughtful and equally enthusiastic, especially as they let their horses know how handsome or beautiful they were. Talk about building confidence!

Every Day Water Tips from Brownie Troop 104

Posted on

Water TipsBrownie Troop 104 has been working hard on a project that involves letting people know about water saving tips and loving our earth.

  • Tip #1 — Power Showers – shorten your shower by 2 minutes and save 150 gallons of water per month:)
  • Tip #2 — Only run the dishwasher when it is full!
  • Tip #3 — Don’t fill your water glass full unless you will drink it all!
  • Tip #4 — Share your water tips with EVERYONE!
  • Tip #5 — Turn off the water faucet while you brush your teeth.
  • Tip #6 — Sweep your driveway clean instead of using a hose.
  • Tip #7 — When you clean your fish tank, use the nutrient rich water to water your plants.
  • Tip #8 — Scrub your dirty dishes in a dishpan and rinse them all at once.
  • Tip #9 — Turn off a dripping faucet and fix leaky ones.
  • Tip #10  Collect rain water to water your plants.
  • Tip #11  Don’t dump leftover drinking water down the drain, use it to water houseplants.
  • Tip #12  Don’t litter-it makes our water dirty.
  • Tip # 13.  Don’t use a sprinkler or other water toys that require a constant flow or water.  Try a squirt gun or fan or water balloons.
  • Tip #14  Don’t fill your bathtub all the way to the top.
  • Tip #15  Use a refillable drink bottle instead of buying bottled water.  It takes 3 gallons of water to make 1 gallon of bottled water!
  • Tip #16  Turn off the faucet while you wash your hands to save 150 gallons/month.
  • Tip #17  Use a bucket in the shower to catch water while it warms up.  Use this water for house plants or flushing.
  • Tip #18  Use your lawn sprinkler 30 minutes or less, run it in the morning or evening to prevent water from evaporating.
  • Tip #19  Use a commercial carwash that recycles water.
  • Tip #20  Wash your pet outdoors in an area that needs to be watered.
  • Tip #21  Keep a pitcher of water in the fridge so you don’t have to run tap water to make it cold enough.
  • Tip #22  Insulate your hot water pipes for more immediate hot water at your faucet.
  • Tip #  23  If you accidentally drop an ice cube while filling your cup, don’t throw it out.  Put it in a houseplant or pet’s water dish
  • Tip #  24  Remember the girl scout rule for flushing:  “If it’s yellow, let it mellow.  If it’s brown, flush it down.”
  • Tip #  25  Only use your washing machine when it is full.
  • Tip #  26  Turn off the water while you shave.
  • Tip #  27  Install water saving aerators and shower heads on your faucets.
  • Tip # 28  Reuse your drinking cups to cut down on washing time.
  • Tip # 29  Scrape dishes before putting them in the sink-compost fruits and veggies to cut down on garbage disposal use.
  • Tip # 30 Reuse bath towels to cut down on washing machine use.

Troop 96 Article for Family Fun Magazine

Girl Scout troop leaders are experts at entertaining packs of kids. We reached out to Girl Scout volunteers across the nation, asking for their best group activities. A flood of inspiring stories and ingenious ideas came in from hundreds of troops. Here’s one of our favorites.

TROOP: Brownie Troop 96
HOMETOWN: Scottsville, New York
LEADERS: Jennifer Ozminkowski and Faith Phelps

What They Did: As part of their participation in the PJ Roundup (an annual event to collect new warm pajamas, slippers, and robes for women and children staying in local shelters), the troop had a sleepover. Each girl was asked to wear her pj’s and bring an extra pair for charity. They collected more than a dozen pajamas for donation.

Why They Love This Idea: It’s a fantastic way to learn about the impact of banding together in service of a great cause. “One set of pajamas may not seem like a lot,” notes Jennifer. “But when each girl in the troop brings in one pair, they realize how much more they can do together.”

The Silver Award is the highest award that a Cadette girl scout can receive. It is a very distinguished honor. It recognizes your efforts in a range of Girl Scout and community experiences as well as your commitment to working to better your life and the lives of others. Requirements of the award ask you to build your skills, explore career possibilities, increase your leadership skills, and make a commitment to improving yourself. In addition to the requirements for leadership the girls completed a community service project.

The Girl Scout Silver Award Project our troop worked on with cooperation from Scottsville Fire Prevention, Scottsville Scouting and RIT School of Fine Arts and Imaging Science, was a short video presentation to promote fire safety with K-3 students in our community. Working with puppets, drawing story boards, doing research, writing scripts and being the puppeteers, our scouts produced three shorts. All three shorts videos are available on line at www.scottsvillescouting.org/firesafe as well as the Scottsville free library, local daycare centers and the elementary school.

The follow girls have earned the highest award presented to a Cadette Girl scout:

Stephanie C., Kaitlyn C., Jessica F., Kyleigh F.,
Allison M., Georgina S., Michelle S., Tess W.

Special thanks to Mr. Sickels, Scottsville Fire Prevention and Gus Cost, RIT School of Film and Animation.

Troop 826 | Rome to Athens

Notes from Toop 826,
Cheryl Lawniczak, Leader
rome2athens.blogspot.com

We created a blog for our trip to Rome and Athens starting July1st.  We will try to keep it up to date and the group will enter  photos and journal entries.  I am not sure how accessible the internet will be and much time we will have at the end of the day but we’ll give it our best effort.  To access the blog site log onto the internet and go to  rome2athens.blogspot.com We will only use the girls first names or nick names and not allow personal information on the site.  Keep in mind any comments sent  will be seen by all.  I’m not anticipating any problems but if we do I will change the security on the site and limit access.

Thanks to all of those who supported us as we have made our dreams to a reality.  Keep us in your prayers for a exciting and safe adventure.

Planet FrowardTwo Churchville-Chili Girl Scouts were interviewed by WXXI for a segment called Planet Forward. The segment was in the running to be shown on National TV but lost in the final round. But it did make the website. Their segment is on the Planet Forward website. They took a day to teach kids about alternative energy during summer camp last year. The group made solar ovens and cooked smores.
